Clinical practice
As a high-volume surgeon and clinician, Professor Sauer performs approximately 400 surgical procedures and conducts 8,000 consultations annually. His primary areas of expertise include: pediatric ophthalmology, myopia control, specialized surgery for strabismus, cataracts, glaucoma, and corneal transplants in children.
Research and Contributions
A prolific researcher, Professor Sauer is affiliated with the EA 7292 Translational Medicine Federation (Unit: “Dynamics of Host-Pathogen Interactions”). His research portfolio includes serving as Principal Investigator for major clinical trials (PHRC and PRI) on atropine for myopia control, toxoplasmosis susceptibility, and the impact of strabismus surgery on daily life. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious journals such as Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and The Journal of Infectious Diseases. His international collaborations span top-tier institutions in Germany, Switzerland, Colombia and Rwanda.
Teaching activities
Professor Sauer is deeply committed to medical education, teaching medical students and residents, notably through the supervision of numerous doctoral theses and deep mentorship. His teaching extends to orthoptists, general practitioners, midwives, nurses as well as international ophthalmologists—specifically across Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe—through a partnership with the IOFF. These educational roles are paired with significant collective responsibilities, including his positions as Vice Dean of the School of Medicine and Director of the Eastern France School of Orthoptics.
