MMOexp-EA FC26: The Biggest Evolution Trap Right Now

Every year in EA FC, Evolutions arrive with massive hype-and every year, a large portion of the community rushes in and makes the same mistakes. EA FC 26 is no different. With the new Team of the Year Honorable Mentions (TOTY HM) Evolution chain, players are already throwing cards into Evolutions without fully understanding how the system works FC 26 Coins.

If you want a long-term, meta-ready midfielder instead of an expensive regret, you need to slow down.

This guide breaks down how the new EA FC 26 Evolutions actually work, why rushing is dangerous, and how to plan an Evolution chain that gives you the right playstyle+ combinations, positions, and longevity.

The Core Mistake Players Always Make

The biggest mistake players make with Evolutions is acting too early.

As soon as a new Evolution drops, people rush to:

Buy a popular card off the market

Lock it into the first Evolution segment

Then panic when new chains release that would've been better

Once a player enters this TOTY HM Evolution chain, you are locked in. You cannot swap players midway, and you cannot "fix" a bad decision later.

That's why the best advice is simple:

Wait until all the information is available.

More Evolutions are coming. More chains will appear. And better routes may unlock stronger cards than what's available on day one.

Overview: The Team of the Year HM Evolution Chain

The new TOTY HM Evolutions are similar to last year's "build-your-own midfielder" chains. This time, you can shape a player into one of three roles:

CAM (Central Attacking Midfielder)

CM (Box-to-Box Center Mid)

CDM (Defensive Midfielder)

However, there are strict limits:

Maximum 86 overall to start

Maximum four positions

Only ONE player can be used for the entire chain

Once you choose your player, that's it. Every future step applies only to that card.

Step One: Build Your Team of the Year HM Evolution

This is the mandatory starting point.

Completing this first Evolution:

Grants the TOTY HM Evolution rarity

Boosts stats across the board (most key attributes pushed toward ~80)

Unlocks eligibility for the next Evolution segments

Without this rarity, your player cannot progress further. This is why order matters so much.

Important:

Do NOT place your player into any unrelated Evolution (even cosmetic ones) after starting this chain. Last year, this broke progression for many players, and EA has not changed how the system works.

Step Two: Choose Your Role (CAM, CM, or CDM)

Once your player has the TOTY HM Evolution rarity, you must choose one role path. Each path grants a different PlayStyle+, which is the most important part of the entire chain.

CAM Path

Grants Finesse Shot PlayStyle+

Ideal for goal-scoring midfielders

Best choice for attacking players

CM Path

Grants Tiki-Taka PlayStyle+

Great for possession-based, box-to-box midfielders

Strong passing and tempo control

CDM Path

Grants Anticipate PlayStyle+

Defensive-focused

Arguably the weakest of the three options

Many players feel CDMs should've received Jockey instead, making the CAM and CM paths far more attractive for meta builds.

Step Three: The Second PlayStyle+ (Releasing January 23)

This is where patience truly pays off.

From January 23, players who completed the earlier stages can add a second PlayStyle+, choosing from:

First Touch PlayStyle+

Long Ball PlayStyle+

Press Proven PlayStyle+

This step is huge. A midfielder with two PlayStyle+ traits is instantly endgame material.

Most players will lean toward:

Long Ball+ for versatility and build-up play

First Touch+ for tight control under pressure

Again, this applies to the same player. You cannot switch cards at this stage.

One Player Only: No Switching Midway

A critical rule that cannot be stressed enough:

You can only use ONE player for the entire Evolution chain.

If you select a player for the first segment, that player must be used for:

1.TOTY HM Builder

2.CAM / CM / CDM Builder

3.Second PlayStyle+ Evolution

You cannot change your mind halfway through. This is why planning ahead is essential.

What About Players Who Already Have a PlayStyle+?

This is another common confusion.

If your player already has a PlayStyle+, they will only gain one additional PlayStyle+ from this chain.

If your player has no PlayStyle+, they can gain two through the Evolution path.

The order matters. If you submit a CDM first, you'll receive Anticipate+ before anything else.

Final Rating and Future Evolutions

Once fully completed, your evolved card will be:

89 overall

Effectively locked out of future Evolutions until much later in the cycle (likely March or April)

That makes this a long-term investment. You're not building a short-term upgrade-you're building a player you'll use for months.Position Change Consumables: Use Them Wisely

During the TOTY campaign, players receive three free position-change Evolution consumables:

Striker → CAM

LM/RM → CM

CB → CDM

These do not grant TOTY HM rarity, but they are extremely useful for setting up the perfect Evolution candidate before starting the chain.

Always apply position changes before beginning the TOTY HM Evolution.

Why "Fresh Legs" Matters (But Don't Rush It)

The Fresh Legs Evolution (expiring soon) boosts pace for midfielders. This can be valuable-but only if applied correctly.

Key warning:

If Fresh Legs pushes your card to 86 overall, you may lock yourself out of the TOTY HM Evolution.

If used properly, it can raise acceleration without breaking eligibility.

This is another reason not to rush. Wait, check ratings carefully, and plan the order.

PlayStyles Matter More Than Stats

Here's the secret most players miss:

Base stats are temporary. PlayStyles are forever.

The TOTY HM Evolution pushes most stats toward 80 anyway. What separates elite cards is:

Finesse Shot

Tiki-Taka

Incisive Pass

Pinged Pass

Intercept

Jockey

Quick Step

The Smart Way to Approach Evolutions

The smartest players:

1.Buy potential Evolution candidates early (to avoid extinction)

2.Wait at least a week before committing

3.Stack PlayStyles using smaller Evolutions first

4.Enter the TOTY HM chain only when the path is clear

Rushing creates average cards. Planning creates meta monsters.

Final Advice: Slow Down and Win Long-Term

EA FC 26 Evolutions reward patience, not impulse.

If you rush into the TOTY HM Evolution: cheap EA FC Coins

You may miss better PlayStyle combinations

You may waste an elite card

You may lock yourself out of future upgrades
